about

Working across sculpture, installation, performance, moving image, and audio in the shape of the spoken word and material sounds, Cos Ahmet’s recent works have enquired into the human subject through the materials that enter his practice. Tropes suggesting the corporeal have consisted of; erasing or distorting the human subject; the body disappearing inside a form; material acting as a secondary skin, barrier, body or limb; and the human form taking on the status of ‘activator’.

When the moving image and audio rub up against these other elements, the anatomy of his work shifts from the physical into the digital gesture, considering the screen, the projected image and the spoken word and other sounds, to become viable ‘part-materials’ that respond and mingle as mutual layers in his ongoing dialogue with the body-material-matters that occur in his practice.

As new works emerge, the body’s ‘physical’ presence is becoming less visible, making way for the invisible activities and actions that the body performs — the indexical, haptic gestures for example, to be preserved, creating new ways of working, thinking and considering the body and its relationship to the materials in Ahmet’s practice to slowly establish and make new marks.
