The media in Cos Ahmet’s practice spans across sculpture and installation, video, audio-text, and performance. He often collaborates with other artists and makers, and views this interaction and exchange of ideas and thinking, as an important way of broadening his practice. His recent works concerned body-material interventions, questioning materiality in relation to the encounter with the bodily and the sculptural. His object and sculptural works often evoke fragmented bodies - body parts without a body, where attention is drawn to the spaces between elements and an encounter between the material and the immaterial.

In his video works, sequences become part of multi-channel video installations, a screen work, or integrated into a live performance. Within this, sound has become very important, whether derived from the materials that enter his practice;  from the spoken words and awkward languages and text that Ahmet creates, to sounds composed by a collaborator.

As new works emerge, the body’s physical bearing is beginning to be less visible, making way for the invisible, or otherwise unseen activities and actions that the body enacts — for example, the indexical, or haptic gestures, are expressed, generating other methods of working, thinking and considering the body in connection to the materials in his practice, to establish a new position or meaning.

Cos Ahmet b. 1973, London. Currently lives and works in the Liverpool City Region.

Cos holds an MA in Fine Art (with distinction), from John Moores Liverpool School of Art, studying under Dr. Imogen Stidworthy, Bedwyr Williams, Rory Macbeth & Chris Evans; a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Textiles, from Middlesex University, London, and a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design, from The Hyde Institute, London. Cos recently completed a year long mentor-led programme with the Conditions (a studio programme for artists), led by Matthew Noel-Tod, receiving mentorship from Conditions Associate & Vienna-based artist, James Lewis.
